GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS

POLYTECHNICS

There are 5 Polytechnics, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic. The 5 Polytechnics provide three year diploma programmes. As Singapore Government provides 80% tuition grant to the students, therefore it attracts lots of foreign students. To enter the Polytechnics, students must pass the GCE O Level Examinations.

GOVERNMENT HIGH SCHOOLS/JUNIOR COLLEGES

Singapore’s high school is also called the Junior Colleges (JC). The JCs provide 2 years academic courses to prepare for the GCE A Level examinations. After passing GCE A Level examinations, students may apply to enter the Singapore Government Universities as well as the European and American various universities depending on the students’ results. There is no admission of students in the middle of the course. Students must pass the GCE O level examinations to enroll into the JCs.

GCE O LEVEL EXAMINATIONS

The General Cambridge Examinations Ordinary Level is the standard examinations among the Commonwealth countries. Students will sit for the GCE O Level Exams after completing 4 years (Express programme) or 5 years (Normal programme) of secondary school education. The student needs to take the O level preparation class before sitting for the O level exams. Because of the needs to participate in the O standard preparation class the study, and takes a test has certain difficulty, therefore O standard quite suitable result medium above, and is willing with to create future schoolmate diligently.

GCE O LEVEL SUBJECTS

The O Level examination subjects: English, Chinese, Mathematics, Science (physical chemistry), Humanities (geography history) and so on, chooses 4 at least, English, Chinese, mathematics, Humanities (geography history) is a compulsory subject.

GCE O LEVEL EXAM TIME & REGISTRATION TIME

The O Level exams start from June to November. The registration deadline is in March.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Majority of the secondary schools are government public schools. After graduating from the primary schools, students will take the 4 or 5 years of secondary education. According to student’s level and learning capability, students will be streamed to Normal Academic class (5 years) or Express class (4 years). After 4 years (Express) or 5 years (Normal) of study students will take the Cambridge General Certificate Ordinary Level examinations (also known as “O” level). Students must take English, Mother Tongue, Mathematics, Science and Humanities. Students can choose elective subjects according to their results when promoting to Secondary 3. Elective subjects are arts subjects, science subjects, commercial subjects and the technical subjects. The school fee payable by international students is S$570/month(ASEAN) and S$820/month(Non-ASEAN).

PRIMARY SCHOOL/DIRECT ADMISSIOIN AT PRIMARY 1

There are approximately 200 government primary schools. School year starts on 2nd of January every year. Children start schooling at the age of 6. The 6 years of primary education is divided into four years of foundation stage (P1-4) and two year directional stage (P5-6). In the foundation stage, the core subjects are English, Mother Tongue and Mathematics. There are other supplementary subjects including music, arts and craft, Physical Education and Civic & Moral Education. P3 students start to study Science. For students to fully display their potential, students are streamed according to their learning capability at P4. In order to be promoted to secondary schools, primary students are to pass the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) at P6. The school fee payable by international students is S$383/month(ASEAN) and S$563/month(Non-ASEAN).
